notes This post is of interest because it was found within a few feet of two other Nemacladus species: the many N. californicus seen here; and the single N. sigmoideus seen here. Although the species wasn't immediately clear from the single withering flower present, I think there are enough diagnostic characters visible in the full-size photo to make a fairly confident ID of N. orientalis...namely, from: the non-inverted corolla (3 lobes ''up'', 2 ''down''); lobes relatively long & narrow, cleft to base, and white with red tips; and the staminal tube deflexed to nearly ''horizontal'' between lower two corolla lobes. Those characters eliminate most the candidates for this locale (i.e. N. sigmoideus, N. glanduliferus, and N. tenuis). The corolla does seem anomalous for N. orientalis in that, in addition to the 3 lobes of the upper lip, the tips of the 2 lobes of the lower lip are also red-tinged. There is a CalPhotos N. orientalis post that intimates red-tips for the two lower corolla lobes...though more subtly than seen here. Perhaps aging enhanced the reddening of the lower lobe tips here? (The relatively short extent of the red tips would seem to exclude N. rubescens.) photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
