01/04/2013 Aaron Schusteff  comment Nasua narica
Thank you Simon for the correction. I photographed this coati at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and got the scientific name Nasua nasua from their web page.

Your review prompted me to investigate further. A found a number of good references...e.g. from the Smithsonian Musuem, the IUCN, and the American Society of Mammalogists descriptions of N. narica and N. nasua. All these references indicate the Arizona species is N. narica, whereas N. nasua is listed as occuring from Columbia to northern Argentina. Beyond the geographic distribution here, the color of the muzzle (white for N. narica, brown for N. nasua) also indicates N. narica. The other main distinguishing characters involve skull features which would be difficult to see in most photos.

Thanks again for your correction. I love these animals, and was happy to learn more about them.
