Upper bajada on western side of southernmost White Mountains, a bit north of Hwy CA-168 between Westgard Pass & Big Pine. (Inyo County, California, US)family

notes This was a fun discovery, on a CNPS trip led by the venerated & ever-affable phyto-photographer, Steve Matson. At first sight I thought this plant was going to be a mustard...due to the bright pink & 4-merous corollas. But closer inspection indicated the flowers have 8 anthers (rather than 6)...and together with those 4 distinctively-reflexed sepals...this suggested a Camissonia relative ;-). Nevertheless, it initially fooled me! The densely stalked-glandular stems and buds are remarkable...as are the densely spreading-hairy abaxial faces of the basal leaves. A beautiful species, and a treat to see. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
