Brother Eric Vogel, F.S.C., died Saturday, June 24, 2000 Queen of the
Valley Hospital in Napa, Calif. at the age of 73 and in the 54th year of
his religious life. Born on January 13, 1927 in Los Angeles, son of the
late Charles Vogel and Marie Hodapp Vogel, Earl Ralph Vogel attended
Cathedral High School in Los Angeles and the Junior Novitiate at Mont La
Salle, Napa. Earl entered the Senior Novitiate of the De La Salle
Brothers of the Christian Schools at Mont La Salle on June 5, 1945 and
received the religious habit on August 14, 1945. Brother Eric professed
his perpetual vows June 24, 1952 at Saint Mary's College, Moraga, Calif.
Brother Eric's ministry as a religious educator included assignments at
Saint Mary's college High School, Berkeley (1949), Christian Brothers
High School, Sacramento (1949-56); Bishop Armstrong High School,
Sacramento (1956-59); and the Junior Novitiate at Mont La Salle
(1962-65).
Brother Eric was first assigned to Saint Mary's College of California at
Moraga in 1959 and over the years until his official retirement in 1994
he taught some 18 years there and some 8 years at Bethlehem University
in the West Bank. Brother Eric earned his doctorate in physics from the
University of California at Davis in 1969. In March of 2000 Brother
Eric was assigned to Holy Family Community, Mont La Salle, Napa.
Brother Eric is survived by his brother Lee Vogel of Brea, California,
his sister Adele Styk of Burbank, California, and several nieces.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 27, 2000 at 7:30
p.m. at Mont La Salle Chapel, 4404 Redwood Road, Napa. The burial
service will take place on Wednesday, June 28, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Mont
La Salle Chapel and Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the
Claffey and Rota Funeral Home, 1975 Main St. in Napa from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. on Tuesday, June 27.
