James Morefield studied Botany and Geology at Deep Springs College, California, earned a B.S. in Botany and Geology from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, in 1986, and a Ph.D. in Botany from Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and the Claremont Graduate School in 1992. He has collected, photographed, and identified plants extensively throughout the North American deserts for 20 years, and has studied intensively the flora of the White Mountains and adjacent areas of California and Nevada. Since 1991, he has been the Botanist and webmaster for the Nevada Natural Heritage Program in Carson City, Nevada.

Area of Expertise: generally familiar with the vascular plants of the desert southwest and surrounding mountains, expertise with the White Mountains of CA-NV and adjacent areas, and with rare plants of Nevada and the Great Basin; expertise with Asteraceae; wrote the Jepson Manual treatments for the genera Ancistrocarphus, Chaenactis, Filago, Hesperevax, Micropus, Psilocarphus, and Stylocline.
