Max Sparreboom (1951) received a PhD in Sanskrit from Leiden University in 1983. He is director of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation in Amsterdam, a cultural organisation that awards the annual Erasmus Prize. Previously he was director of the International Institute for Asian Studies (Leiden and Amsterdam), and Professor in Scientific Relations between Asia and Europe at Leiden University. His herpetological interests focus on the reproductive behaviour of Asian and European salamanders, on which he has published since 1983. He lives in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
