CalPhotos photographer profile for Charles Patterson:
| My mother, an avid gardener and collector of seeds, plugged me in as a child to nature, wildflowers, and the mountains of California. She bought me my first 'Munz' at 16, and I've now been a free-lance plant ecologist for 40 years, studying and photographing the native flora of California and the west, with special emphasis on rare plants, native grasses, and wetland species, and particular familiarity with Sonoma County. | Special interests/expertise: With an outdoor upbringing (Tuolumne Co.) and passion for nature, I decided not to be a mountain hermit, and instead studied at UC Davis under Jack Major, Mike Barbour, and Merton Love, and have been fortunate enough to parlay all that into many years of professional botanizing, photography, rare plant cultivation, wilderness travel (naturalist and river guide), and have developed many bumps, bruises, and callouses from the work world interplay between all things natural and the, um, human element, e.g., trashed landscapes, conflicting rules and reg.s, piles of permits and endless years to acquire them, bureaucracies, agency turf battles, and of course, all manner of the human element. Through plants, photos, and gardening, I can escape and pretend I became a hermit. | Total Photos Contributed: 111 [View all photos] or [See a list of all photos] or [View most recent photos] |
