date of photo Apr 24, 2016
location
Hoo-Koo-E-Koo trail, Kent Woodlands (Marin County, California, US)family
Asteraceae
notes A graceful and endearing ''tarweed'' of shady coastal woodlands. The leaves and sparsely long-soft hairy, opposite below, and two-ranked above (i.e. the leaves spread in opposite directions from the stem-axis, alternating in pairs at roughly 90° angles as one scans the nodes upward along the stem). In this particular plant, only the lowermost the leaves were opposite...but the consecutive pairs of alternate leaves above 'behaved as if they were opposite' as far as maintaining a 'two-ranked' behavior. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
