Asteraceae
notes Detail of two radiate flower heads of the small shrub Acamptopappus shockleyi. A tiny 'micro bee fly' (more photos here) can be seen on a disk floret near the center of the flower head at left. Looking carefully at the flower in the full-size image, note also the dark-orange thread-like stamen filaments visible below the lighter-orange anther tubes of the disk florets...through which the yellow, distally puberulent (mostly unopened) style branches project upwards. Detailed descriptions and other interesting info on the two species of Acamptopappus can be found in this 1988 MadroƱo paper. The flowering phenology this year (2023) has generally been somewhat delayed by cold temps during much of the spring, and enhanced by unusually high cumulative (& well-spaced) winter rains. For comparison, note that Steve Matson's photo here from the same general area (< 2 mi away), taken on 5/25/19, appeared well-past flowering. Steve also has nice photos showing the unusually hairy cypselae (or achenes) and somewhat flattened linear pappus. photo category: Plant - shrub
