notes Two phyllaries have been separated from the flower head here, and a single ray fruit (cypsela) appears at the bottom of the image. Each phyllary completely encloses (and protects) a single ray fruit in Layia gaillardioides. The phyllary at the top here has been slightly torn, and some of the black surface of the enclosed cypsela is (barely) visible. The ray fruit is quite different from the disk fruit. It's glabrous, more narrowly-elongate, and is noticebly arcuate. One of the (many) innovations in Asteraceae is the presence of different types of ray & disk fruit in a single head...which presumably can have different dispersal and developmental capacities. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
