  • date of photo  May 20, 2012
  • location   Boulder Creek (Santa Cruz County, California, US)
  • family Polemoniaceae
  • notes   Profile view of upper portion of plants from a very distinctive population of Leptosiphon parviflorus long known (and celebrated/championed :-) by Santa Cruz naturalist Randy Morgan. The corolla limbs are the deep-orange of California Poppies, with a pair of red dots at the base of each lobe. The corolla tubes are very long...up to 5cm.

Although, in general, flower color pattern in L. parviflorus is highly variable...with yellow, pink, and/or white corolla variants, often mixed within a single population...this rare entity is fairly uniform in color throughout its very localized population. It appears to have close affinities to the equally rare coastal species Leptosiphon croceus, originally described as Linanthus croceus by Alice Eastwood in 1904 (see isotype image here). Indeed there is a 1941 UC Davis Herbarium specimen record which presumably refers to this same Boulder Creek population as Linanthus androsaceus var. croceus, a previous name for what is currently recognized as Leptosiphon croceus.
