notes I believe this a male of a(n at this time undetermined) species of Anthophora, working a flower of A. lentiginosus var. nigricalycis. Note how he has forced the 'wings' and 'keel' of this typical pea-family flower down and out of the way, so that he can thrust his long proboscis deep into the base of the corolla to access the nectary there. In the process, the stamens & stigma are positioned right below his 'chin'...though I can't tell if: 1) pollen is being successful placed on the long white hairs there; or 2) pollen from another flower is being transferred to the stigma;...or 3) if he's munching on the pollen of the stamens, while also taking nectar?! If it were a female, I'd expect she'd more likely be trying to collect pollen from the stamens for eventual transfer to the scopa on her hind legs. (Though she might also sometimes feed on the pollen, or perhaps temporarily store small amounts of it in her crop?). photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
