notes Corylus cornuta is wind-pollinated and flowering occurs early in the season (Jan-Mar) before leaves emerge...which facilitates more open wind-flow for pollen dispersal. In this photo, three pendent male-flowered catkins appear at the two proximal nodes of the main stem (at right), and the subsequent two more distal nodes (at left) each support a sessile, bracted cluster of female flowers of which only the delicate bundle of brilliant red styles appear exerted from the bracts. According to the FNA genus description for Corylus, pistillate flowers are always positioned at stem nodes distal to those with staminate flowers. photo category: Plant - tree/shrub
