notes Slo.: zdravilna boraga - Habitat: near sea shore; semiruderal place next to a dirt road; flat terrain; calcareous, skeletal, sunny, open, dry place; average precipitations ~ 900 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, elevations 8 m (25 feet), Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comments (pertain to pictures in the Flicker album Borago officinalis): Borago officinalis is a species of Mediterranean origin. However, today it is spread all around the world. In several European countries it is considered introduced and in others already naturalized. The Euro-Med Plant Base (Ref.1) shows quite unusual distribution of it. The occurrences appear to be divided into two large regions, west and north, with many central and eastern European countries in between, where it is supposed to be introduced. Slovenia is marked as a country where it doesn't grow, which is definitely wrong. Slovenian plant key (Ref.2) names the species in the Sub-Mediterranean region of the country and the FloVegSi Data Base (Ref. 4) includes 18 observations in the country. - Borago officinalis is a plant, which cannot be confused with any other. Its habit, nodding, intensive blue flowers and very strong hairiness make it very easy to be recognize. It is a very old medical plant sometimes still grown in gardens from where it often goes wild.
