location

Onagraceae
notes Slo.: močvirsko ciprje - syn.: Chamaenerion dodonaei (Vill.) Schur, Chamerion dodonaei (Vill.) Holub, Epilobium rosmarinifolium Haenke, Chamaenerion rosmarinifolium Moench, Epilobium angustissimum Weber, Chamaenerion angustissimum (Weber) Gro - Habitat: mountain slope above road scarp, south aspect; partly overgrown calcareous, stony, colluvial ground, among sparse bushes and low trees; dry, sunny place, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 8-10 deg C, elevations 425 m (1.390 feet), Alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: sandy soil among stones and small rocks. Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Epilobium dodonaei): The flowers of about 20 European species of the genus Epilobium are beautiful but mostly small and reddish-pink or whitish-yellowish colored. So, they are not really showy plants. Only three species have larger flowers and Epilobium dodonaei has the largest up to 3 cm in diameter. The plant can be more than 1 m tall with numerous stalks carrying vividly pink flowers. Very beautiful vista! Only much more common and well-known Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium = Chamaenerion angustifolium) is eventually more attractive. It is up to 2 m tall mountain plant, with long pink inflorescences with many lowers (plant is also widely used in horticulture). But, Epilobium dodonaei is much rarer and less widespread. It can be found in the south and Central Europe (and Turkey) only, while Epilobium angustifolium is native throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere, including large parts of the boreal forests.
