Poaceae
notes Slo.: velika migalica - syn.: Macrobriza maxima (L.) Tzvelev - Habitat: dry grassland; flat, open, dry, sunny, calcareous, skeletal ground; elevation 4 m (13 feet), average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Briza maxima): Briza maxima is a species growing all around Mediterranean Sea and in some other European countries. Here it is a naturalized plant. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and best known grasses and a great horticultural favorite in flower-arrangements. The plant bears large, very ornamental, graceful, nodding heads. As one of only three known species of genus Briza in Europe, it is not a common plant compared to other grasses. In Slovenia it is on the red list marked as rare. - Ref.: (1) A. Martinči et all., Mala Flora Slovenije (Flora of Slovenia - Key) (in Slovenian), Tehnična Založba Slovenije (2007), p 879. (2) T.
