Anagallis caerulea L., Anagallis latifolia L., Anagallis platyphylla Baudo, Anagallis carnea Schrank, Anagallis parviflora Hoffmanns. & Link, Anagallis phoenicea Scop. - Habitat: abandoned, unmaintained former cultural land next to a footpath; almost flat terrain, calcareous, skeletal ground; dry and sunny place; average precipitations ~ 950 mm/year, average temperature 13-15 deg C, elevations 12 m (40 feet), Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: red Karst soil among stones. - Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Anagallis arvensis): Anagallis arvensis is a low, annual, creeping 'weed' with tiny but beautiful, vividly colored scarlet red or blue flowers. It grows 'everywhere'. It is native from north Africa countries bordering to Mediterranean Sea shores to almost Novaya Zemlya in the north and spread by humans all around the globe. Most often one can find it on or near extensively used or abandoned cultivated ground and semiruderal places. - Its flowers are usually scarlet red, but more to the south one goes (in Europe), more flowers with blue color can be found. Taxonomy of this species is not yet totally fixed. Some consider the blue variant as a subspecies of Anagallis arvensis, that is Anagallis arvensis ssp. foemina (Mill.) Schinz & Thell. Others consider(ed) it on species level, but usually in an another genus, in the Lysmachia genus. Be that as it may the plant is beautiful from close, however, neither large nor showy. - Interestingly the flowers, which measure a good cm across, are sensitive to air humidity. In humid conditions they close and in dry air they open their petals. So, for centuries people took it into account trying to predict weather. One of German name – Wetterkraut – (e.g. Weather-plant) clearly indicates this. - Ref.: (1) A.
