  • notes   Slo.: navadna rosnica - Habitat: road side; semi-ruderal, calcareous, skeletal ground; open sunny, warm, dry place: flat terrain; elevation 30 m (100 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: red soil. - Comment (pertains to pictures in the Flickr album Fumaria officinalis): Fumaria officinalis is actually a widespread weed of cultivation. It is present in all European countries from Novaya Zemlya to north African Mediterranean countries. Its flowers are tiny, only about 10 mm long or even smaller. However, close look reveals surprising beauty. - In Mediterranean region several species of this genus exist. Most of them bloom whitish, yellowish or pale pinkish. All are quite similar in shape and very variable. To determine them to species level one must consider several detailed traits, like dimension and shape of calix. It is composed of two thin and tiny whitish leaflets at the base of the corolla tube. Other important traits are the length of flower, length and posture of flower/fruit pedicels and pertaining bracts, the shape and surface of fruits, length of inflorescence and its stem, etc. Flower color is very variable and less important. - Fumaria officinalis is the most common from all of them in the region and also among most intensive pink-violet colored. - Ref.: (1) A.
