Henn. - Habitat: mixed forest, Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies, Ostrya carpinifolia, Salix eleagnos dominant trees; at the base of a mountain slope (north aspect) and river shore; Calcareous, skeletal, colluvial ground; in shade, humid place; exposed to direct precipitations; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 6-8 deg C, elevation 545 (1.790 feet), alpine phytogeographical region (M. Wraber, 1969). - Substratum: large Fagus sylvatica trunk in its late disintegration state lying on ground. - Comments (pertain to pictures in the Flicks album Crepidotus crocophyllus): Crepidotus crocophyllus seems to be a rare find in Europe. According to Slovenian database Boletus informaticus (Ref.: 6) it is known from only four MTB sub-quadrants in the country, in neighboring Austria only 8 records are documented (Ref.: 7), in Germany it is considered rare to extremely rare (Ref.3). This is much different in North America, where the species is considered as one of the most common in the genus (Ref.: 5). Crepidotus crocophyllus is among the most beautiful species of the genus with its orange gills and strong 'geometric' impact. Others are mostly whitish and much less remarkable. - Description: about 12 pilei present, from 3 to 6.3 cm wide and 2 to 3.8 cm from substrate; pilei cutis dry, not waxy, doesn't peel away; smell and taste indistinctive; 10% KOH reaction on gills reddish; SP abundant, brown, oac784. - Spores mostly globose, some sub-globose, minutely warty. Dimensions: (5.8) 6.1 - 7 (7.5) × (5.7) 5.9 - 6.8 (7.1) µm; Q = 1 - 1.07 (1.1); N = 40/1; Me = 6.5 × 6.3 µm; Qe = 1. Olympus CH20, NEA 100x/1.25, magnification 1.000 x, oil; in water, fresh material.
