Hill - Habitat: Rocky sea shore; inclined terrain, southeast aspect, a few meters from water; full sun; hot, dry, open terrain, exposed to direct rain; elevation 4 m (13 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil among rocks crevices. - Comment (pertains to pictures in the Flickr album Euphorbia myrsinites): Euphorbia myrsinites is an interesting succulent known also in horticulture. It is native to the Mediterranean region but grows only in and west of Italy, on the whole Balkan peninsula, in Turkey and all around the Black Sea. This warmth loving plant, prefers hot, dry sites and is very drought tolerant. It does well in poor, rocky soils and can be frequently found on ruderal ground, at least in Slovenia. Euphorbia myrsinites, like almost all other very numerous members of the genus Euphorbiaceae, has a milky white sap that is poisonous. Although not deadly, it should not be ingested. Externally it can cause skin irritation or even severe dermatitis in some sensitive people. Yet, it is still a beautiful decoration of white, rocky, otherwise quite barren sea shore of many Adriatic islands. - Ref.: (1) T.
