  • location   Adriatic Sea, island Cres; south of settlement Grmov, Kvarner archipelago (Rijeka region, Croatia)
  • notes   Slo.: no name, CR: izmjeničnocvjetni krocanj - Habitat: shallow pond about 0.5 m deep, with Eleocharis palustris and Ranunculus peltatus; sheep watering hole in garrigue; open, sunny, dry, place; stony, calcareous ground; elevation 195 m (640 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-15 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: muddy soil at the bottom of the pond. - Comment (pertains to Flickr album Myriophyllum alterniflorum): In spite of hot summers and generally dry climate of island Cres and extremely stony and calcareous, highly water permeable ground, there exist some rare spots with shallow ponds. They serve mostly as watering holes for sheep and other animals. These places are frequently full of interesting plants including some of them, which stay completely submerged during all of their lifespan. - There are four species of the genus Myriophyllum, which have been found so far on Adriatic islands according to Ref. 4. All of them are submerged in water and have deeply pinnately divided leaves. Two of them, namely Myriophyllum heterophyllum Michx. and Myriophyllum spicatum L. are quite different from this find. But, Myriophyllum verticillatum L. is similar to Myriophyllum alterniflorum. Since the plants found did not yet flower when photographed, it was quite challenging to determine them to species level. The decisive trait, which led me to the decision for Myriophyllum alterniflorum is the arrangement of thir thin segments of pectinate leaves (pinnately divided into fine, +/- parallel segments, comb-like). These segments are (mostly) alternate with Myriophyllum alterniflorum and oppositely arranged with Myriophyllum verticillatum. As it can be seen from Fig. 5. the leaves better correspond to Myriophyllum alterniflorum. - Ref.: (1) K. Lauber and G. Wagner, Flora Helvetica, 5. Auflage, Haupt (2012), p 200. (2) W.K.
