  • notes   Detail of a fruiting head and pappus of M. douglasii ssp. tenella. Note the very short pappus scales...much shorter than the aristae or cypselae (averaging < 1/8 the length of the entire pappus length).

    The pappus scales here are conspicuously hairy on their abaxial sides, whereas often they're virtually glabrous.
