  • location   Near Kite Hill (Santa Clara County, California, US)
  • family Cynipidae
  • order Hymenoptera
  • class Insecta
  • notes   The aim of this photo is to show how the gall of the cynipid wasp Antistrophus microseris cryptically blends in with its surroundings.

When I took the photo in the field, I had seen the single ''bulbous'' gall located just left-of-center on the stem supporting the single Microseris fruiting head in the photo. It was well-camouflaged among the many similar-looking nodding flower-head buds of the gall wasp's host plant Microseris douglasii ssp. douglasii visible in this photo.

Only later...upon closely scrutinizing the full-size photo on a large computer screen...did I realize there was not just one additional gall...but two! These gall are very difficult to locate in the field, partly because they look quite similar to the nodding buds of their Microseris host plant.

The 2nd image in this series indicates the locations of the 3 galls with pink arrows.
