notes This photo shows the only perigynia I found on the plant that still had its stigmas attached...although, due to the way they're curled-up (and perhaps apically appressed together?), I can't tell for sure whether there are 2, 3, or 4!
The number of stigmas per flower is often used as a diagnostic character for species ID...but in this particular instance, if you follow the keying sequence carefully, it turns out it doesn't make a difference. (Moreover, if I understand things correctly, the number of stigmas can sometimes vary among different flowers and/or plants within a given species of Carex.)
