This photo details the two 'basal' pistillate spikes of this plant. Some diagnostic characters to note are:

1) the conspicuous pubescence of the perigynia;

2) the ''nerves'' (= longitudinal veins) of the perigynia...in particular, there are only 1 or two strongly pronounced nerves...with perhaps a few more faint ones;

3) the '''pistillate scales' (= 'flame-shaped', membranous bracts partially wrapping around the perigynia) are acuminate and are equal to somewhat exceeding the length of the perigynia. They also have 1-3 (strong to faint) nerves, and are white-margined with a streak of red before their yellow green medial area.
