notes Old stem gall caused by gall wasps on Quercus agrifolia. The twig containing the gall died at some point after the wasps emerged. Here the gall was sawed in half showing the larval chambers where the wasp larva fed and pupated. On very old galls like this one, the holes fill with sawdust, frass from other insects that re-use the space, and other debris. In this image the larval cells haven't been cleaned out so all the debris is visible.photo category: Animal - Invertebrate-Insect
