INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Apr 25, 2009
  • location   The Cedars (Sonoma County, California, US)
  • family Orchidaceae
  • notes   A (somewhat small) specimen of Epipactis gigantea growing in the middle of a serpentine seep. The leaves of the plants in the localized population at the Cedars tend to be mostly red-purple. Roger Raiche, who has botanized the area for many years (eventually buying it to preserve it's biological uniqueness) refers to this as Epipactic gigantea forma rubifolia, and anticipates that it will eventually be given subspecies status due to it's unique leaf characters, ecological specificity to serpentine, and restricted geographical extent.
