It is rarely more than 1 – 2 cm tall, sometimes even less. It grows mostly on ground, among tree roots or on calcareous rocks covered with a thin layer of soil or hummus but sometimes also on bark of deciduous trees near the ground. It can be found mostly on shaded places, but also in open places, which are from moderately moist to moderately dry. It is widespread in Europe, from Island to Mediterranean, as well as in West Asia, Africa, both Americas, New Zealand and Oceania.
