Lower Trenta valley, right bank of river Soča; between villages Soča and Trenta; near the trail from abandoned farmhouse Strgulc, Soča 47 to Planina Na skalah, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes syn.: Peltigera polydactyloides auct., Peltidea polydactyla var. microcarpa Ach., Peltigera canina f. incusa (Flot.) Kremp., Denkschr., Peltigera polydactylon var. crassoides Gyeln. ex Erichsen, Peltigera polydactylon var. microcarpa (Ach.) Schaer., Peltigera rufescens var. incusa (Flot.) Körb. - Habitat: mixed wood (Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies, Fraxinus ornus, Ostrya carpinifolia dominant trees) on moderately steep mountain slope, south aspect; calcareous ground; in shade, relatively warm place; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevations 610 m (2.000 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: moss on 0.5 - 1.5 cm thick layer of humus on calcareous rock half-buried in ground. - Comment: There are only a few records of this species in Slovenia (Ref. 5., Ref. 6.). Most of them are not far from this find. The thallus of this find was sterile. So, characteristic, almost black apothecia shaped as upright painted nails could not be used in the determination. This make my determination somewhat uncertain. However, small (up to 3 cm long and 0.8 – 1.5 cm wide), mostly concave, +/- shiny, only moderately bullate lobes, some minutely pruinose near the margins (hard to see when the thallus is moist); lobes have distinct bluish-black tint except in a completely dry state (eventually, when soaked with rain, slightly bluish-green-black); whitish under side with broad, dark brown to black and flat veins and few, dark, stubby and short rhizines speak in favor of Peltigera neckeri. The thallus was about 20 cm in diameter and firmly adpressed to the substrate and interwoven with the moss. It was difficult to separate the thallus from the substrate.
