Adriatic Sea, island Krk, Šotovento region, west of village Brzac, toward the end of the dirt road to the sea shore, Kvarner bay (Rijeka region, Croatia)notes Slo.: mačje uho (neznan hibrid) - Habitat: fields enclosed by stony walls with olive trees; almost flat terrain, calcareous ground, full sun, dry place; elevation 86 m (300 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 12-13 deg C, sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil. Comment: (relates to the Flickr album Ophrys sp.): This interesting, morphologically unusual Ophrys was found on island Krk growing in the midst of a group of Ophrys holosericea (Burm.) Greuter ssp. untchjii = Ophrys untchjii (M. Schulze) P. Delforge. Its form doesn't fit to any of the fifteen species and subspecies of this genus growing on the island according to the Reference 5. Hence it is most probably a hybrid. I asked four experts who know much more about this genus than me, what could the parents be. Yet we haven't come to a convincing solution. Most of us agree that rectangular, very long and narrow petals, as well as sepals, resemble on something from Ophrys sphegodes agg. Mill. The following potential candidates of this group grow on the island Krk: Ophrys sphegodes Mill. ssp. atrata (Rchb. f.) A. Bol`os, Ophrys sphegodes Mill. ssp. sphegodes and Ophrys sphegodes Mill. ssp. tommasinii (Vis.) Soó. The lip resembles to a taxon in the Ophrys scolopax agg. Cav., most probably on Ophrys kvarneri Perko & Kerschb = Ophrys zinsmeisteri Fuchs & Ziegenspeck, which is quite a common species on the island. Apparently the flowers do not show any of the morphological characteristics of Ophrys holosericea (Burm.) Greuter ssp. untchjii = Ophrys untchjii (M. Schulze) P. Delforge in spite of the fact that many of them grew in the vicinity. So, the origin of this hybrid remains a mystery to me. Ref. (1) H. Baumann, S.
