Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soča and Trenta, left bank of river Soča, upstream of Matevž's narrow footbridge, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: plazeča mrežolistka - syn.: Satyrium repens L., Orchis repens (L.) Eyster ex Poir., Serapias repens (L.) Vill., Epipactis chinensis (Schltr.) Hu - Habitat: Riparian woodland, Picea abies dominant, alluvial terrace about 3 m above river water level; calcareous ground; flat terrain, relatively humid, shady place; elevation 545 m (1.790 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil. Comment (relates to Flicker album 'Goodyera repens'): Goodyera repens is a widespread (Europe, Asia, North America) but nowhere a common orchid. It belongs to one of the smallest orchids (among about 80 taxa belonging to family Orchidaceae) present in Slovenia. It loves hidden, shady, secluded places and is often hidden in surrounding mosses and vegetation. Hence it is not commonly seen or a well-known plant. An encounter with it is, at least for me, always a happy experience. It commonly spreads vegetatively, therefor it grows often in groups of several plants. This fact reflects also in its species name 'repens' which means 'creeping'. This time I counted over 70 flowering plants in an area of about 4 square meters – a true mini orchids garden.
