location
Southern area of Carrizo Plains National Monument (San Luis Obispo County, California, US)notes View of part of the southern portion of the Caliente Range, showing the vicinity between roughly the Quail Spring area (at left) and the Lawson Spring area (at right). Photo taken in 'panoramic mode' with an iPhone 6 Plus, and spanning an approximately 170° viewing angle looking from E-S-E to W-N-W. A(n exquisite!) photo by Alice Abela from very nearby to here, but looking more to the northwest, can be viewed here. In Alice's photo, the highest point on the most distant ridge (at center-left of the image) is the summit of Caliente Mountain. The abundant small yellow-flowered annual covering the foreground area in this photo is goldfields (Lathenia californica). The large shrubs are mostly ephedra (Ephedra californica), with much less frequent junipers (Juniperus californica). Lest you think all the plants here had specific epithet californica, note that there were two conspicuous species of locoweed present and in flower: the taller, erect Astragalus oxyphysus; and the low-growing & sprawling A. lentiginosus var. nigricalycis ;-) photo category: Landscape - habitat
