  • location   Adriatic Sea, island Krk, Šotovento region, west of village Brzac, toward the end of a dirt road to sea shore, Kvarner bay (Rijeka region, Croatia)
  • notes   Slo.: Untchjevo mačje uho - syn.: Ophrys untchjii (Schulze) Delforge, Ophrys fuciflora (Schmidt) Moench var. untchjii (Schulze) Soo, Ophrys medea Devillers & Devillers-Tersch - Habitat: fields with olive trees enclosed by stony walls; almost flat terrain, calcareous ground, full sun, dry place; elevation 86 m (300 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 12-13 deg C, sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: (relates to the Flickr album Ophrys holosericea ssp. untchjii): This interesting Ophrys holosericea subspecies (or species of Ophrys genus for many orchidologists) is quite common on island Krk. It is an endemic taxon distributed in Istria, the larger islands of the Kvarner archipelago and the central Dalmatia near Split. It can be found scattered also in Slovenia near Adriatic Sea coast. From the shown pictures one can see how variable it can be. Most interesting seem to be the specimens with pink sepals and petals although they should be 'according to the books' usually some shade of greenish-yellowish or whitish. Most characteristic traits for this taxon are wide appendages - 'horns' compared to lower lip dimensions and narrowly triangular and short petals (compared to sepals). - Protected in Slovenia according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). Pravilnik o uvrstitvi ogroženih rastlinskih in živalskih vrst v rdeči seznam, Uradni list RS, št. 82/2002 (Regulation of enlisting of endangered plant and animal species onto Red List, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 82/2002) (2002). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. - Ref.
