INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 13, 2021
  • location   Rocks Ranch 'Area 7 G' on the RR Botany Survey Map (Monterey County, California, US)
  • family Brassicaceae
  • notes   ''Flowers having four stamens'' is a diagnostic character for separating the non-native C. hirsuta from the similar-looking native C. oligosperma (which has 6 stamens)...per the Cardamine keys in the Jepson eFlora and Flora of North America. The photo here shows four stamens (as well as four petals and four sepals...all rather shriveled)...so this keys to C. hirsuta.

'Hirsute' means 'covered with long, rather stiff trichomes', with the diminutive being 'hirsutullous'. The descriptions in both floras state that both C. hirsuta and C. oligosperma are sparsely hirsute, at least proximally. Examining the full-size version of the 1st photo (click the image after it loads), the upper sides of the leaflets here would, to me, be better described as hirsutulllous. But either way, the 'hirsute-ness' character doesn't help separate the two species.
