INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 12, 2021
  • location   San Bruno Mountain (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Brassicaceae
  • notes   Thanks to Sandy B for pointing me in the right direction for this mysterious (and unfortunately non-native) purple-flowered mustard.

A distinctive diagnostic character is the presence of opposite leaves...a relatively unusual occurrence in Brassicaceae. According to the FNA Brassicaceae treatment there are only a few taxa in the family that have opposite leaves: 5 species of Cardamine, a Draba species, and Lunaria annua...and other than Lunaria annua none occur in our area. In addition, leaf shape and other characters clinch the ID.
