  • notes   There was an isolated population of coipos (Myocastor chilensis) living in the reed bed bordering the laguna. In June of 2011 the Chilean volcano Puyehue erupted and ash covered the area around Laguna de Los Juncos with about 2 cm of fine ash. The covered the leaves of the plants, and the herbivorous mammals (domestic and wild) had their teeth and intestines damaged by the glass-like grains. In October, the coipos were dying, and the population went extinct. This was one of the last live ones.
