notes A few flowers of Ayenia compacta are seen here within the dense canopy of leaves. Whoever pollinates this must be fairly small. The structure of the Ayenia flower is fascinating...for lots of details see the remarks under my other photo here (which was taken from the same plant a year earlier :-). Four of the 5 anthers are nicely discernible on the lower flower in the full-size image here (click it again after in loads to fully enlarge)...as are the ''androgynophore'', the petal appendages, and other distinctive features of the flowers of Ayenia. photo category: Plant - shrub
