INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 16, 2019
  • location   Traffic-triangle median where Lake Merced Blvd & John Muir Dr meet at south end of Lake Merced, San Francisco (San Francisco County, California, US)
  • family Campanulaceae
  • notes   This image is a composite of two photos stitched together using Photoshop (note the centimeter ruler is obviously “broken”). It shows a sequence from left to right of: 1) a flower bud, 2) a small open flower, 3) a large open flower, 4) a developing fruit with abscised & shriveled corolla still adhering to the top of the ovary, 5) a maturing fruit after corolla drop, and 6) a past-mature, dehisced capsule.

Of particular interest are the two open flowers that both seemed to be at the same mid-anthesis stage but were strikingly different in size (one 7 mm in diameter, the other 13 mm). These flowers were collected in one 'hand grab' and appeared to belong to the same plant...but the stems were very densely branched below and broke off as separate pieces above the plant base...so I'm not sure if the flowers were from the same plant, or from two plants whose stems were closely intermingled. Either way the variation in flower size was remarkable.

There were many W. marginata plants present at this location, all growing in low, densely-branched clusters from tight cracks at street level along the cement curb surrounding the traffic-triangle median of the 3-way street junction. Numerous other weedy species were thriving in the open soil many inches above street-level within the curb-bounded triangle itself...but, curiously, no Wahlenbergia grew there.

Many flowers were present on the Wahlenbergia plants....some open but most closed, as it was late afternoon. There were also many flower buds, and even more fruit…many with capsules already dehisced. I was surprised to see so many flowers, fruits, and capsules this early in the season...it appears that the San Francisco population of W. marginata has a flowering phenology that occupies a much wider portion of the year than I had anticipated.
