notes Corylus cornuta is wind-pollinated and flowering occurs early in the season (Jan-Mar) before leaves emerge...which facilitates better wind-flow for pollen dispersal. In this photo, 12 pendent male-flowered catkins are visible and at least 3 nodes with bracted-clusters enclosing female flowers are visible via their delicate small, exerted tufts of brilliant red styles. A single fruit from last year is also visible still attached to a stem. According to the FNA genus description for Corylus, pistillate flowers are always positioned at stem nodes distal to those with staminate flowers. photo category: Plant - tree/shrub
