  • location   Lower Trenta valley between villages Soča and Trenta; left bank of river Soča; somewhat upstream of the footbridge near Otokar farmhouse, Trenta 4; East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: rjastorjavi šaš - syn.: Carex scopolii Gaudin, Carex scopoliana Willd., Carex kerneri Kohts - Habitat: river bank, grassland with scattered bushes and Salix eleagnos trees; flat terrain; calcareous, alluvial, sandy ground; cool and humid place, mostly in shade; elevation 540 m (1.770 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 6-8 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Sedges (Carex) is a huge genus. The first 29 named taxa were described by Linnaeus in 1753. In 1909 the genus already contained 793 species and many lower taxa, 253 of them were from Europe (Ref.: 2). Today Koopman (2011) (Ref.: 2) states over 2.000 species worldwide and about 520 species, subspecies and hybrids for Europe. 126 hybrids (2011) are still unnamed (only their hybrid formula is described). Every year several new taxa are added to the list. 'Only' about 90 taxa of this genus are present in Slovenia (Ref.: 4). Yet, this is quite enough to make their proper identification often a serious challenge. This is also due to specific shape of their flowers and inflorescences. We do not normally think of the grasses as flowers, yet they are. Some specific botany knowledge, also in terminology, is needed to manage their determination. - Species Carex ferruginea is a central- and South-European plant (Ref.: 5). It doesn't belong among 'the difficult ones' in terms of determination, although at least two other species, namely Carex austroalpina and Carex brachystachys, are quite similar (Ref.:1). Carex ferruginea can be distinguished from both by having long stolons (unfortunately not photographed). The plant loves calcareous, cool, shady and moist places in subalpine and alpine elevation zones, although it can be found also lower, usually in narrow and shady valleys as it is the case with this find. Its main traits are: terminal spike (called spikelet with grasses) with male flowers only, below it 2-3(4) distinctly pedicellate (particularly the lowest), shiny, reddish-brown, overhanging female spikelets; female flowers having pistils with three stigmata; flat, about 1-2.5 mm wide leaves, reddish-brown colored at the base of stems and long distinct stolons. - Ref.: (1) Personal communication (conf.) with Dr. Igor Dakskobler, Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
