notes Many years ago, Steve Edwards mentioned finding an intriguing Delphinium species in the Short Canyon drainage, that he ultimately placed as D. hansenii. So when I saw this there, I suspected that's what it might be. Indeed, it goes to D. hansenii ssp. kernense in the Jepson eFlora Key to Delphinium...and the FNA description (and key to subspecies) appears to confirm that ID. In particular the shape and pubescence of the numerous leaves, and their mostly basal arrangement, as well as the color & density of the flowers, conforms with D. hansenii ssp. kernense. Moreover, the location here was within a few hundred meters of coordinates given for the voucher here from April 13, 2002. Those who may be interested can find Davidson's 1908 discussion of D. hanseni, and his original description of var. kernense here. Both Davidson and the FNA discussion of D. hansenii indicate that the seed morphology provides a good verification character (e.g. to distinguish D. hansenii from D. hesperium). There was no fruit present when I encountered this plant...but perhaps there will be next time ;-) photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
