plant community Sandy Pinyon/Junipernotes The Plant List and Tropicos consider this plant to be a species: Penstemon jonesii Pennell. Others, like ITIS and Intermountain Flora (IF), list it as a hybrid: Penstemon X jonesii - Pennell (proposed species). IF and others suggest that it is a hybrid between Penstemon eatonii ssp. undosus and Penstemon laevis. The lavender and blue colors of P. laevis apparently move the red or orange-red of P. eatonii towards violet-red and red-violet, with the lips of some hybrids being blue as in P. laevis. Some corollas of hybrids also tend to be larger than those of P. eatonii. As the flowers of P. laevis do not develop as early as P. eatonii or P. X Jonesii, I speculate that the plants of diverse form & coloration found in the Grand Staircase-Escalante N.M are pollinating each other & again hybridizing with P. eatonii before they may again hybridize with the later opening flowers of P. laevis.contributor's ID # Penstemon jonesii-07-051319 7100-9106-051319photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
