location
Fort Ord (Monterey County, California, US)family
Polygonaceae
notes Terminal portion of a stem with two inflorescence clusters...each with a single open flower (and more on the way). The perianths here are just over a millimeter wide. Note that each flower in this species has three stamens, each with a two-lobed anther...in distinction to most other members of Chorizanthe which typically have 9 stamens (though Chorizanthe flowers often appear to have fewer stamens, as they unfurl sequentially in 3's, and often some anthers fall from the filaments fairly early). Each style also bears three style-branches tipped by glistening & slightly-swollen stigmas. Photographed in area G4, per the mapping zones delineated in the 2019 ''Flora of Fort Ord'' by David Styer, who is also a co-author (with Randy Morgan & James Reveal) of the 2014 paper where this Fort Ord endemic was described. Many thanks to David for leading a wonderful visit to see these plants. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
