INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 19, 2019
  • location   Big Morongo Canyon (Riverside County, California, US)
  • family Polemoniacee
  • notes   This plant was atypical for the population of Linanthus maculatus found here...the vast majority of which clearly fit under the nominate subspecies L. m. ssp. maculatus. But the flowers of this plant had no spots...and thus would (deceptively!) seem to conform to L. m. ssp. emaculatus. The latter is not currently included in the Jepson eFlora Linanthus treatment...but was first reported in the lead article of the 2014 issue of Crossosoma, Vol. 40(1) and formally described on pp. 71-75 of the 2015 'Fistful of Polemoniaceae' paper.

On pg. 73 of the latter paper a photo illustrates an interesting distinction between the two subspecies: flowers of L. m. ssp. emaculatus display 'reverse herkogamy', with stigmas positioned below the anthers (aka 'thrum' flowers); whereas the nominate subspecies L. m. ssp. maculatus has flowers of the 'approach herkogamy' (or 'pin') type, with stigmas positioned above the anthers...as illustrated clearly in Keir's photo here. Note that at least two of the flowers in my photo here have their (just-emerging) stigmas positioned at nearly the same height as the anthers...and presumably the stigmas will be held a bit higher once they actually unfurl. Thus the herkogamy type here suggests this is indeed the nominate subspecies, and the lack of spots suggests this plant is simply a 'sport' within the larger population. So these do seem to be ''good'' subspecies, in that geographic separation of the more southerly Anza-Borrego area metapopulation from the Little San Bernardino Mountains one has allowed for divergence in more than just maculation.
