  • location   Right bank of river Soča between villages Idrsko and Kamno, right of the dirt road leading from the main road Kobarid – Tolmin to the riverbank about 200 m from the main road, East Julian Pre-Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: Untchjevo mačje uho - syn.: Ophrys untchjii (Schulze) Delforge, Ophrys fuciflora (Schmidt) Moench var. untchjii (Schulze) Soo, Ophrys medea Devillers & Devillers-Tersch - Habitat: Grassland, extensively mowed, locally flat terrain; alluvial, calcareous ground; open, partly sunny place; surrounded by riparian, broadleaved forest; elevation 182 m (600 feet); average precipitations 2.000-2.600 mm/year, average temperature 10-11 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Small insect imitating orchid Ophrys holosericea ssp. untchjii (a taxon on species, subspecies or varieties level or non-existent at all; depends to whom you listen) is an endemic taxon discovered and first described in Istria by Croatian botanist Untchj. It is a (Sub-)Mediterranean plant having a limited distribution in Istria, the islands of the Kvarner bay archipelago in Adriatic Sea and some small areas in the central Dalmatian coast. Nevertheless, pictures 20 to 26 show plants, which were photographed in part of the Soča river valley, which already belongs to the alpine phytogeographical region of Slovenia. To my knowledge this is eventually the most northern known occurrence of this taxon. - If Ophrys holosericea ssp. untchjii keeps with its 'traditional' form, it is relatively easy recognized by its rather compact and greenish appearing flowers. However, it can have also whitish or pinkish perianth, so determination is not always easy. - Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). Pravilnik o uvrstitvi ogroženih rastlinskih in živalskih vrst v rdeči seznam, Uradni list RS, št. 82/2002 (Regulation of enlisting of endangered plant and animal species onto Red List, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 82/2002) (2002). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. - Ref.: (1) Personal communication and conf.
