  • plant community   Chihuahuan Desert scrub at 5479' (1670m)
  • notes   erect, many stemmed perennial at base of limestone hill in sandy/silty calcareous soil and gravels. Plant in chasmogamous (cross fertilization) phase with open flowers. Note conspicuous reddish sticky internodal bands on most stems,the purpose of which is of considerable debate as either serving as a protective barrier for inflorescence from ants and crawling insects; or to trap and absorb any insects as a source of additional nutriment at flowering time.
