  • location   Southeast of town Pula, next to the main road from village Pomer to village Medulin (Istria, Croatia)
  • notes   Slo.: dišeča kukavica - syn: Orchis coriophora ssp. fragrans (Pollini) Richt., Orchis fragnans Pollini, Antheriorchis coriophora (L.) Klein & Strack ssp. fragrans (Pollini) Jacquet - Habitat: Dry grassland with scattered bushes and small trees; stony, calcareous ground; almost flat terrain; quite open, dry, sunny place; elevation 20 m (60 feet); average precipitations 800-900 mm/year, average temperature 13-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Most botanical sources split Bug Orchid (Anacamptis coriophora) into two quite similar subspecies, not always easy to separate, which, in addition, often grow together on the same places: Anacamptis coriophora ssp. fragrans and Anacamptis coriophora ssp. coriophora. Both are rather small orchids and warmth loving plants growing in Mediterranean, Asia Minor, reaching Caucasus and Iran on the east and south outskirts of the Alps on the north. They can be distinguish by their 'overall' color of inflorescence, shape of the lip and particularly by their smell. Anacamptis coriophora ssp. fragrans is lighter, more pinkish and has longer lip (8-11mm Ref.: 3) and a pleasant, vanilla like smell, while Anacamptis coriophora ssp. coriophora is usually of more reddish color and has rather unpleasant smell. Some find it, it smells on bedbugs (if you know how they smell?). Anacamptis coriophora ssp. fragrans is rare and protected by law in Slovenia, however, not far from state's borders in Sub-Mediterranean regions of northwest Croatia it is not a real rarity. In Mediterranean regions it is quite common and often prevails over Anacamptis coriophora ssp. coriophora. (Ref.: 5). - Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). - Pravilnik o uvrstitvi ogroženih rastlinskih in živalskih vrst v rdeči seznam, Uradni list RS, št. 82/2002 (Regulation of enlisting of endangered plant and animal species onto Red List, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 82/2002) (2002). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. - Ref.: (1) A.
