plant community Chihuahuan Desert scrub at 4117' (1254m)notes shrubs in thin soils and calcareous gravels on flats, terraces and ridges, Spiny, erect wandlike stems from woody base, each terminated by showy panicles of red tubular flowers. First spring flowering generally on leafless stems without dependence on recent rainfall.
