plant community Chihuahuan Desert scrub at 4061' (1238m)notes Low shrubs on hillside in mixed conglomerate gravels of Cretaceous Yucca Formation. Pads purplish throughout, 1-3 long spines per areole along upper pad margins, longest to +/- 8 inchs (10 cm), black with pale tips. Distinctive purple color produced by betacyanin pigments present in normally purplish tinged, gray-green pads but greatly enhanced by drought or cold stress.keywords: CDR, Chihuahuan Desert, IMRS, Indio
