plant community Chihuahuan Desert scrub at 3146' (958m)notes upright spreading flat padded succulent with exceptionally long, to 7+ inches, dark orange to black spines, on southwest facing hillside of clayish silts overlain by mixed coarse volcanic lag gravels. Distinctive purple color produced by betacyanin pigments present in normally purplish, gray-green pads but greatly enhanced by drought or cold stress.
